2018 || The Word(s) Of The Year

The Concept

I’ve heard a lot of talk on different podcasts and motivational videos during 2017, the idea of having a word of the year. It’s not a new or even a very revolutionary concept. But it is something that is new to me that I think could be really inspiring. The basic premise is; choosing a word to be at the core of your life and decisions during the year.

For example the words I have heard used are “Prune” “Focus” “Brave“. The thought behind it is if you use the words to steer your motives, actions and decisions. This leads to the word ultimately helping you to consciously reframe your life. If you start to fall away from the plans you have created or the values you have committed to in your life these words will pull you back.

My Words

Me being me, I couldn’t just do it the same way as everyone else and therefore decided to choose three words, which all interlink. My words for 2018 are;

intentional : consistent : simplify

These are the three main things I want to focus on. Why? Because I truly believe by focusing on these areas and practicing them I will find that I am able to actually live life, rather than reacting to it.

The Vision

2018 is the year that I want to go into it with my eyes wide open. If I am intentional with my thoughts and actions then I will be more aware. I will spend less time putting out  mini fires and more time stoking the fires of things and people I am passionate about.

Being intentional will also give me a sense of control I often don’t feel like I have. I will know that only I am truly in charge of my thoughts and simple actions. It gives me back accountability. Which will hopefully encourage me to realise if I want a different output, I need a different  input.

I am pretty sure that every year my main goal is ‘to be more organised‘. I go off and buy some new shiny stationary and profess “This is the year, I will become more organised”. However,  I am realising that there is so much more than new stationary to achieve this. If I implement the above three elements they will ultimately lead to a life that by default is more organised and even more importantly filled with joy.

The Takeaway

After much thought about this subject (hence it being posted after the New Year). I have decided that all of these words have one thing that will truly pull them together. An overarching word that must happen in order for these words to remain at the core of what I do.

The main thing I need to do is to take action. In order to be intentional I have to take action and choose how I want to be spending my time. When I notice I am casually wasting my time doing something fruitless, then I have to intentionally choose to do some thing else. Therefore physically taking action to ensure I am staying true to my intentions.

The only way to be consistent is to keep choosing to take action over and over again. If I want to be consistent with the washing I have to do it everyday, I can’t congratulate myself for getting to the bottom of the washing pile and then take four days off (this is something I actually do), I am setting myself up to fail.

And again in order to minimise I have to take action. I have to physically remove the clutter from my life. I need to sort through items, do tip and charity shop runs and even take the time to declutter and minimise my external inputs. This may mean journalling, limiting social media or minimising the apps on my phone. The key is taking the time to complete to action that will lead to me minimising the the different things taking up my most important resource… time.

I guess what I am saying is, if I want to see changes in my life this year. I have to take ACTION and create the changes I want to see.

I hope this makes sense? I hope in some way this inspires you to take action too. If any of this resonates with you I would love to know what your theme/word/goal is for 2018 and how our plan to achieve it. On that note it is time for me to go and put another load of washing on.

Much love and many thanks

      As someone who has used this strategy I assume you know the benefits of having a word. It’s never to late to pick one. It doesn’t have to be the new year 🙂
      Thanks for stopping by.

      Hi Rebecca,

      Thank you so much for commenting. I feel on the past week having these words to focus on has really helped me. I am seeing a shift in my mindset too. I think you should look into the concept if you think it would work for you.

    Fab post lovely, I think it’s great to give yourself some focus. Love the ‘intentional’ that’s one word that I’m focusing on this year too

      Thank you for commenting and sharing this post. Really means a lot. I already feel like I am achieving more each day by focusing on these words. It’s funny it’s much harder to be intentional than I anticipated, but it much more rewarding. Good luck with being more intentional and this year too.

      Hi Caroline,

      Thank you for stopping by. I’m glad that you like the idea. I am already finding it is helping me to focus. I have high hopes for this year if I just take action.

    This resonates with me. I’m definitely refocusing my life this year after turning 45 on New Years Day and trying to minimise distractions that get in the way of my inner calm and happiness.

      Oh Happy Belated 45th birthday Mags!

      I think as we get older we start to realise the value of our own inner calm and happiness. I think it can be quite freeing. I wish you luck with refocusing this year and minimising your distractions.

    This is such a thought provoking post Cherie, thanks for sharing it. I read it and hadn’t come across the concept of a word for the year. Then only a couple of hours later I read the suggestion on someone else’s blog so I’m definitely feeling the nudge to give it some thought. I love your ”intentional” word and it fits with what I’ve been reflecting on this morning in my hour or so of child free time. I’ve been working through these questions (https://nosidebar.com/intentionally/) to make sure I’m leaving 2017 on a positive note and before I start reviewing how I would like 2018 to be. Like you I find it hard to fix on one word so mine would be ”conscious”, ”calm” and ”trusting”.

      Hi Nic

      I am so glad that you enjoyed this post. I really think that having these words will help to keep me focused. I think it’s a great way to discover what is truly important to you.

      I really like your words too especially conciliatory. How funny you read mine and then later read something else about it.

      Let me know if you find choosing the words help. I think I am going to print mine out and frame them or stick them on the wall/fridge as a reminder.

    I really like your 3 words for 2018. Definitely something I try to live by, as well. Stationery is nice to get you started, but it will not keep you consistent. People make things a lot more difficult than they need to be, so simplify if you can! Good luck!

      Thank you so much. I feel my three words with the higher arching theme of Action really sums up what I need in my life.

      You are right stationary only gets us so far! We do make things harder for ourselves. I am determined to be consistent and I plan to keep looking back at this post to encourage and remind myself.

      Thanks for commenting
